Writing Better Product Descriptions That Sell
If your WhatsApp is full of “size?” and “material?” messages, the product page is doing half a job. Good descriptions close the gaps before the chat starts.
Quick answer
Product descriptions that sell follow a simple formula: open with what the product is and who it is for, explain the practical benefits, list hard specs (size, material, weight, quantity), then add an order note covering price inclusions, delivery, and payment (UPI / COD). Write like you reply on WhatsApp — clear, short, and specific. Mine your real customer questions and answer them on the page so DMs become orders.
Why Instagram captions are not product descriptions
A caption sells a mood. A product description sells a decision. Buyers comparing two kurtas or two snack boxes need sizes, ingredients, shelf life, and what arrives in the packet.
When that information lives only in your head, every new customer restarts the same chat. Good copy is unpaid customer support that works while you sleep.
Next step: list your top 10 SKUs in the Product Catalogue Template, then write descriptions one product at a time. Ready to publish? Use the product catalogue template.
The 4-part product description formula
Use this order every time. It keeps you consistent across 5 products or 50.
Part 1
Hook + who it is for
Part 2
Practical benefits
Part 3
Specs checklist
Part 4
Order / delivery note
1. Hook + who it is for
One or two lines. Example: “Soft cotton night suit for daily wear — ideal for humid summers in Mumbai.” Name the buyer situation, not just the fabric.
2. Practical benefits
What changes for the customer? Easy wash, gift-ready packing, spice level mild enough for kids, fits regular Indian sizes. Skip empty adjectives like “premium” unless you prove them.
3. Specs checklist
Bullet the facts: dimensions, weight, colour options, material, pack quantity, expiry if food, wattage if electronics. Specs are where trust lives.
4. Order / delivery note
What the price includes, shipping time, COD availability, and how to confirm size on WhatsApp if needed. One short paragraph is enough.
Before and after: same product, clearer copy
Before
“Beautiful handmade jewellery. Perfect gift. Order now!!!”
After
“Oxidised jhumkas for festive wear. Lightweight alloy, hanging length 5.5 cm, push-back closure. Ships in gift pouch. Price includes shipping within Rajasthan; pan-India via UPI prepaid.”
The after version answers size, material, packing, and payment without a DM. That is conversion writing.
Mine your WhatsApp for better copy
Open your last week of chats and mark every repeated question. Those lines belong on the product page.
- •“Is this pure silver?” → add material line.
- •“Can I get it by Friday?” → add dispatch cut-off time.
- •“What is the spice level?” → add mild / medium / hot.
- •“COD available?” → state COD pin codes or city limits.
Update descriptions quarterly. Your FAQ evolves as you sell.
Photos and copy must agree
If the description says “set of 6” but the photo shows four, trust breaks. Match count, colour, and accessories between image and text.
Use daylight phone photos with a plain background for most products. Then write the description while looking at the photo so you do not invent details.

Three categories, three description angles
Food / snacks
Namkeen gift tin
Lead with flavour and occasion, then pack weight, ingredients highlight, shelf life, and whether the tin is reusable. Mention festival dispatch deadlines early.
Apparel
Cotton kurta
Lead with fabric feel and fit, then length, sleeve style, size chart link, wash care, and colour accuracy note for phone screens.
Home / decor
Planter set
Lead with indoor/outdoor use, then diameter, material, drainage holes yes/no, and whether plants are included. Fragile packing note reduces return fear.
Product description mistakes that stall sales
Only adjectives
“Amazing quality” without specs forces a DM.
Copy-paste across SKUs
Wrong sizes and colours destroy trust fast.
Hiding the pack quantity
Buyers assume the worst when quantity is unclear.
No care or expiry info
Food and apparel especially need this on-page.
